From the Beginning

The rocks under foot have been scoured and scarred, first by themselves grating in the tectonic thrust from the buckling mantle, then by being sheered off again by more slabs buckling and scraping their way to the surface. When the surface cooled the sky rained ash and then water and then the sun baked the unlevened mess with its white heat until it was rent with chasms and red mud rivers.
This is the beginning.
